Hosptial Stay #2

On the 10th, Devin woke up at 3 am with a high fever. Reagan felt warm, so we checked her's and it was over 100 degrees, too high for a newborn. A couple of hours later, it rose past the point of concern on her doc's paperwork, so I called to get the news I was expecting - go straight to the ER and we'll be admitted for 48 hours for labwork to rule out an infection. During those 48 hours, she had more episodes of low oxygen levels, like when she was born. So, the doc ordered a sleep study and G.I test to look for sleep apnea. The orders for the GI test got lost and the sleep lab made a scheduling error, so the test that was supposed to get done Wednesday night didn't get done until Friday night. Then the results took an entire day to get, so we had to stay Saturday, too. On Sunday, she was discharged with a diagnosis of sleep apnea which is common in preemies. Our living room looks like a mini-hospital. We have a sleep apnea monitor (with a very loud alarm), 6 big tanks of oxygen for times when her levels drop, and vials/syringes of caffeine (of all things) to stimulate the respiratory center of her brain to breathe more. The doc says she will most likely outgrow this in a few months. Now we just have lots of follow-ups, but thank God that she is healthy (she already weighs a pound over her birth weight) and we'll be just fine!
